Ballet
The importance of Ballet is key to a dancer’s development hence why we encourage all pupils to attend a Ballet class.
Ballet is a classical dance form with its own vocabulary, techniques, and teaching methods. Originating during the 15th century, ballet classes focus on developing good posture, improving balance, developing coordination, building strength, and increasing flexibility.
Students learn ballet technique through a progressive series of exercises and steps while learning self-discipline, grace, and proper dance class etiquette.
Tap
Tap dance is a form of dance that uses the sounds of tap shoes striking the floor as a form of percussion.
The younger ones love it as they like to make a lot of noise. Older ones love the technical side of tap and hard work it takes to become an established tapper.
It is like riding a bike you never lose the ability to Tap.
Our Adult Tap Class on a Thursday night is great exercise, sociable and most importantly lots of fun.
Miss Julie’s favourite genre.
Modern
Modern Dancing is a highly energetic dance style which defies a single permanent definition. This is largely due to its ability to adapt, develop and evolve with the changing fashion in dance. Modern dancing is exciting because of the wide and ever-growing range of contrasting elements.
The whole body is used in modern dance to tell a story or depict an idea and travelling steps, high kicks, leaps and turns are included, so modern dancers need to be fit, flexible and strong. Modern dance technique is derived from classical ballet and so we strongly recommend that children who wish to learn modern at higher levels also take weekly ballet classes.
As in all dance styles, rhythm is important in modern dancing to make it interesting, varied and often, surprising, so learning tap dancing alongside modern is advisable, especially at lower levels.
Street Dance
We have two classes one on a Tuesday evening (Years 2 – Year 5) and the second on a Saturday for older children.
In the classes they learn commercial / street dance steps and style to up to date music. They will also learn age-appropriate choreography of varying commercial / street dancing styles, as well as develop their improvisation skills, strength, flexibility and musical timing.
Both are high paced classes, great exercise and lots of fun. Very popular.
Acro
Acrobatics uses strength and flexibility to perform gymnastics-based tricks. In these classes students perform conditioning exercises to prepare them for increased difficulty. It teaches flexibility, balance, strength and coordination. A great addition to enhance flexibility and strength for all genres. We run two of these classes on a Tuesday evening.
What Our Parents and Students Say
Fantastic family run dance school in the heart of Stockport. With annual shows, friendly competitions my daughter loves going here and has made some lovely friends. Its like a big family 🥰
I started at Bates as soon as I turned 3 and I can’t recommend the dance school enough. Bates became a second home to me, like it does all the girls and the teachers can’t do enough for you. The quality of the dance shows every year are amazing and the opportunities Miss Julie provides for all the children are amazing. Bates won’t only provide you with amazing dance lessons but friends who become family too.

I have been a member of Bates Stage Academy for almost 19 years now; it has become my second home and I have made friends for life! BSA has given me so many amazing opportunities and helped to develop my confidence through performance. I have so many memories throughout my years at BSA and I can’t imagine what I would have done without dancing here. It has given me much more than just dancing – it has given me life skills too. I cannot recommend this dance school enough!
